Manchester United Player Profiles : Wesley Brown
Wesley Brown is one of the local lads to play for United. He signed up for United as a trainee back in 1996 and soon turned professional later that year. He made his breakthrough in the United starting eleven in the trebble winning season deputising for Denis Irwin. Although he did not enjoy a lengthy run in the side, he was able to catch of the eye Sir Alex in that he was an accomplished central defender and certainly one for the future.
Wes Brown unfortunately had the most horrendous thing happen to him that any footballer could ever imagine. He had a training ground accident that ended his hopes of figuring in the subsequent 1999-2000 season for United. He did manage to recover, however, and did succeed in winning a place in the starting eleven for the next season along with Jaap Stam. This season was the one where he really came to the fore, being called up by Kevin Keegan for the England squad as well.
He then had a series of injury nightmares that plagued his progress both at club and country level and it wasn’t until 2005 that Brown truly recovered from the injury setbacks to once again figure prominently for United. He formed an impressive partnership alongside Rio in the 2005-2006 season and won a lot of plaudits as a result.
He continues to be an important member of the United squad and although not a regular at the back, he is back somewhat to his best and raring to go for the season that is ahead.
