Manchester United vs. Wigan Athletic Review

Another fantastic United display and another three points in the bag, this time against Wigan. Ronaldo seems to be in the form of his United career as everything he touches turns to gold these days! Wigan came into the game on the back of a heartbreaking loss to a Chelski side that barely deserved to beat them on their own turf so in a way they had a point to prove. But Old Trafford is certainly the last place you’d want to go to prove a point, especially when United are at their rocking best!

From the off, United looked strong and controlled the midfield. There were five changes made to the side that beat Villa the other day. But Wigan withstood the early onslaught by United and managed to go into half-time 0-0. But on came Ronaldo after the interval and changed the game almost instantly! Paul Scholes crossed into the box and found unmarked Ronaldo’s head who had no trouble putting it calmly into the back of the net to extend his amazing goal-scoring run for United. He would score another one soon after a penalty was awarded to United and although his initial effort was saved, the did not have any trouble dispatching the rebound to claim his second goal of the game.

The goals were flowing in and soon the third followed after an incisive pass from O’Shea and a flick from Rooney saw Solskjaer in plenty of space and the Norwegian excellently slotted it into the corner of the net under the advancing Kirkland.

United were now in cruise control and although they had several more chances to score, Rooney in particular, the job had been done. The only downside was their goal in injurty time when Silvestre was adjudged to have fouled David Wright in the box and the ref awarded a pen to them.

The festive season is here and we have a host of fixtures coming think and fast and going through them unscathed with our lead at the top intact would be the utmost priority. Arguably the toughest of them is our away trip to the St.James’ as they have playing some good stuff of late. I only hope we don’t get bogged down by that cold weather up there and do it to them one more time.

Ronaldo’s brilliant form for us recently has earned him praise from every team member, especially the gaffer. Edwin believes it’s the negative reaction towards him from the opposing fans that drives him onto greater heights. I wouldn’t disagree with that, since Ronaldo is a constant source of boo-ing from other fans and they just can’t get over their WC agony.

In other news, Fergie says United have nothing to worry about with regard to the recent ‘bungs’ scandal going on. Fergie says that the report does not mention anything remotely related to United, and that is good news!

Manchester United Transfer Targets

As January draws ever-closer, the rumour mill is in full circulation as all sorts of speculation is making its way into the tabloids. Among the constant source of speculation are the names of three players in particular: Owen Hargreaves, Joey Barton and Gareth Bale. Read more on this story here.

To be fair, the debate surrounding the arrival of Owen Hargreaves has been going on since forever and only recently got heated when the Bayern chairman claimed that Owen would not be leaving the Munich outfit this summer. However, the papers are rife with rumours that he will eventually be on his way as soon as he regains full fitness, which is not very far away now.

Gareth Bale, meanwhile, is a young left-back from Southampton. He has attracted the attention of a lot of Premiership clubs lately but one thing’s for certain that if Fergie wants him, he’ll probably get him.

Joey Barton has also been linked with us strangely. Personally, I am not a very big fan of his although he is the muscular type, fit for a midfielder that is. Fergie knows better I guess!

Manchester United vs. Aston Villa Review

United stepped back into the fray for title contention as they thumped the Villans 3-0 in their own backyard! It was normal service resumed, have to say, from the lads who surely would have gotten a rollicking at the hands of their gaffer after doing down at Upton Park last week. But to our dismay, the Blues who looked set to be heading towards a draw, were able to pull out yet another victory from nothing as they clinched their tie in the last minute with an Arjen Robben goal! Bugger! But we must keep going on and concentrate on our lot rather than theirs.

Xmas is here and the fans demanded a performance worthy of the time and the United team responded in accordance. Two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and a stunner from Scholes helped defeat a Villa side short on quality, but not on determination.

All the goals came in the second half and started around the hour mark by Cristiano Ronaldo when he cut inside the Villa defence to score the opener. Five minutes later, Paul Scholes scored a scorcher of a goal when his volley went in off the woodwork in the 64th minute. Ronaldo was now at his best and created numerous chances that would have been put away on another day. He scored the killer third goal five minutes from time to cap a wonderful display and earn a well-deserved man of the match medal.

So, a resounding win against Villa was just what we needed and we got exactly that! Let’s hope we keep collecting points throughout the festive season to keep the pressure up on Chelski to keep winning and they just might slip-up, they nearly did today!

I found some very neat desktop wallpaper about United today on Google Images that just had to be shared so I decided to do a quick little post on United wallpaper before seeing us take on the Villans. Like any other Red, I expect us to deliver and demand nothing but three points hoping Chelski would drop some, although that looks sort unlikely as they are away to Wigan.
Enough of the banter, let’s move on to those pics I was talking about. First one is a nice picture of Edwin Van der Sar, United’s ever-reliable goalie. The picture is brought to you by FanAlert.com.
Moving on, the second one is a neat wallpaper of Wayne Rooney I found on ManUtdOnline.org.
The last two are two more stunning additions to Soccer-Art.co.uk. I don’t know how they come up with such excellent art work. Bravo! Enjoy!

Manchester United Legends : Denis Law

Your Ad Here

Denis Law, simply put, was widely ackowledged to be the most ‘entertaining’ United player ever before the arrival of Eric Cantona. He was a player all the fans loved because he gave absolutely everything when on the pitch. This fierce Scotsman fought for everything and was afraid of nobody, few players could match his competitive instincts.

Of only medium height and slim in build, Law had a lions heart and a salmons leap. Always playing with his long shirt sleeves distinctively gripped in each fist, he could frequently out-jump much taller men to score with his head. Denis could score from anywhere and close in he was lethal. If the keeper fumbled he pounced and within seconds the Law-man was wheeling off, arm up in celebration.

Law’s most important abilities were awareness and anticipation. He always seemed to see the action slightly ahead of everyone else and with his superb reflexes he knew how to use that to deadly advantage. He started his footballing career with Huddersfield town in 1956. After an unhappy time in Italy with Torino he joined United with a new British record transfer fee of £115,000 in August 1962. He scored two goals on his debut in 1962 and after scoring in United’s FA Cup Final win of 1963, a stream of goals followed. 160 of them in only 222 games over his first five seasons. Many of them were outrageous, some seemingly impossible, but everything was done with a confident arrogant style the fans found irresistible.

Law won the European Footballer of the Year award in 1964 and captained the team on several occasions. He helped United win the league twice, 1965 and 1967, forming the legendary trio of Best, Law and Charlton. On the International scene he was a regular
up front with Scotland. Law played in many a clash with England, most famously when they beat the then World Champions 3-2 at Wembley in 1967.

He played for Scotland a total of 55 times and olds the joint Scottish international goal scoring record with 30 goals longside Kenny Dalglish. Sadly, such was his fierce competitiveness Law was sometimes injured, no more costly than when he missed the 1968 European Cup triumph because of a knee injury.

Controversially, in 1973 he was given a free transfer by Tommy Docherty but had more good times with Manchester City and Scotland. In an infamous incident at Old Trafford 1974 with United deep in trouble at the foot of the league and playing City, Law in the 85th minute half-heartedly back-heeled the ball into United’s net. It won the game for City 1-0 and United were consequently relegated.

The devastation on Law’s face after the goal showed the bond he still had with his old club. In fact, it was his last ever kick in League football as he was so downcast he retired straight after the game. The fact the United fans never blamed him for it showed their great affection and respect for him also. His career in football ended after playing for Scotland in the 1974 World Cup. Since then he has been involved in media work and working currently for BBC Radio 5, Sky and MUTV.

Denis Law will always be remembered as a great, a player to set the passions and imagination of every fan on fire. The ultimate United goal-scorer, the first and some
may still maintain, King of Old Trafford.
