1970s                                                                                 1990s

Manchester United’s decision to alter the club badge in 1998 caused a minor outcry amongst die hard fans. Up until then, the badge appeared with the words “Manchester United Football Club” on the crest. The 1998 decision removed the words “Football Club” and put “United” on the bottom level of the badge. It was meant to reflect the fact that it was now a brand and more than a football club, but it angered traditional fans who valued the crest.

The devil has been a fixture on the badge since the 1970s, after the FA recommended that all clubs should copyright their badges. The 1970s (first image) badge is now synonymous with Manchester United, even if the 1990s badge (second image) has a subtle difference. Man Utd wouldn’t be the same without it!

  1. The funny thing is, fans don’t really talk about it much, I think that the simplification has probably been for the best. At least the look of the crest is the same, that will never change!
