The Treble Was Not To Be

Milan

Aftera month or so off, I’m back, and just in time for the Premier Leage title it seems!

Unfortunately, last night the treble dream proved to be one step too far on our valiant quest. The amount of matches took their toll and last night was the result. Losing 3-0 to a rampant AC Milan side was no disgrace after the season we have had but you can’t help but be disappointed. Fingers crossed that this will not spoil the fun of the next few weeks - we are still on for the League and Cup double after all!

The Roma Argument Drags On

RomaRiot

No matter what is said or done, the crowd trouble that occurred at Roma in the Champions League will just not go away… and will most probably get worse before the final leg of the tie next week. Today, Itailian police have released video footage, much like that shown above, that they suggests proves the fact that Manchester United fans charged at the police and thus provoked a reaction rather then being victimized by the Italian officers of the law.

The videos do actually make it appear that way. At least 18 Manchester United fans were injured and no doubt a small minority will retaliate to get revenge on Wednesday.

It may be interesting to see what stance UEFA takes because they have already handed United a fine as a result of the crowd trouble that occurred in Lyon in the last round. This time the club will not get off as easily.

Scholes Ban Only 1 Game

Red Scholes

There has finally been some good news from the Champions League for Manchester United. In a game that saw Paul Scholes sent off, crowd trouble and ultimately a 2-1 defeat, there was little to celebrate about. However, it has now emerged that Schole will only face a one game ban.

Scholes was on a yellow card going into the tie and so a yellow card alone would have seen him receive a ban. However, UEFA have said that Scholes will indeed be banned for the return leg against Roma but will not be banned if United get through to the semi finals. He will, however, still be on a yellow card and so could possibly receive another ban before the final.

The Cold Light Of Day

RomaRiot

As daylight dawned in Italy today, big questions were being asked of the role than Rome’s police force played in the trouble last night before, during and after the Champions League quarter final. In the cold light of day, stories of their heavy handed tactics began to emerge and painted them in an inhumane light.

Riot police were accused of hitting out with their batons indiscriminately. Whilst some Manchester United fans may have been involved at various points in the tie, there was absolutely no need to hit out at women and children. It is behaviour that I find disgraceful. No doubt they will however go unpunished. There are, however, fear of retaliation next week…

Here Come the Hooligan Labels Again…

FansRoma

After everything I said a week or so ago in the defence of English football fans, the minority have to spoil it and make me eat my words! Tonight saw some of the most horrific scenes I have ever witnessed at a football game as violence erupted between Manchester United fans and Italians before, during and after the game. I say Italians because it began as fights with Roma fans on the way to the ground but then progressed into a full scale riot inside the ground with the police.

Manchester United took 5000 official fans tonight and the sad thing is that I am willing to bet it was the other 1000 “fans” that travelled without tickets that sparked the trouble to begin with. Supporters were apparently taunting police inside the ground before charging at them. Of course the police then reacted, making for some unsavoury scenes with innocent bystanders getting hurt.

It is about time that these hooligans were eradictaed from the game. They only serve to give all English fans a reputation that very few of us deserve. They are going the right way about getting us all banned from travelling to away games in Europe, but what will our teams do then with no support to help lift them? The game will suffer and we will no doubt slip back into mediocrity.

If Liverpool fans can travel with little trouble, why can’t we?

Roma Defeat Hits Hard

ScholesRed

Manchester United tonight suffered a blow to their Champions League aspirations as they lost to Roma 2-1. They went 1-0 down to a Taddei goal on 44 minutes. However, ten minutes before that Paul Scholes was sent off for a second bookable offence. Both tackles were stupid and could have been avoided but, as a result, Scholes will miss the next leg of the tie at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney pulled a goal back on 60 minutes, only for the Red Devils to go 2-1 down just seven minutes later.

The scoreline has left Manchester United a lot to do at Old Trafford next week. They do have the advantage of an away goal but may well need that advantage if they struggle to get past Roma’s defence.

Come on boys, you can do it!

Ferguson Wants Away Win

Alex Ferguson has called upon his Manchester United team to achieve an away win against Roma in Italy tonight. He has pointed out that Roma drew at home in the last round against Lyon but won 2-0 away and he doesn’t want the same thing to happen this time around.

The ream hasn’t be in goal scoring form in the Champions League and have rarely won by more than one, but Ferguson believes that they will need a cushion this time round. Only time will tell!
