Man Utd Fans Penalised

Roma

Manchester United fans have been informed that they will be able to travel to Rome to watch their team play in the semi-finals of the Champions League, despite speculation that they would not following a UEFA fine in recent weeks. That was a result of crowd trouble again Lille in France that was more the home club’s fault than anything.

However, Roma have declared that Manchester United fans will have to wait in the stadium until all home fans have left in an attempt to prempt any possible crowd trouble there. It was the Italian police that have made the decision rather than the club. However, I think that it is just another attempt by another country to make our fans out to be violent hooligans when, in truth, countries like Italy and Turkey have far worse records than us. It is a form of discrimination because it would actually make far more sense to let 4000 out first rather than make them wait for a further 60000 to leave.

Manchester United Fined Over Lille Game

                                                  Lille

News emerged from UEFA headquarters late afternoon yesterday that both Manchester United and Lille were to be fined as a result of crowd trouble in their extremely eventful Champion’s League quarter final first leg.

The first twenty minutes of the game saw Manchester United fans pushed up against railings as too many fans had been let into the away end. Lille have been fined in excess of £40,000 for poor organization and security at the game and Manchester United were fined £6,200 for the poor behaviour of their supporters at the game. The crowd trouble has paled in significance when placed next to the Lille reaction to Ryan Giggs’ goal as they threatened to walk off the pitch. However, the ruling shows that the unpleasant incident earlier on in the game had not been forgotten.

Last night, Manchester United found themselves in the last eight of the Champions League. They beat Lille 1-0 at Old Trafford to put the tie beyond all doubt and advance with a 2-0 aggregate lead. The victory ensured that Lille would have been beaten by a clear goal even if their appeal against the first leg goal by Ryan Giggs had been upheld.

The goal was scored by Henrik Larsson in the 72nd minute. It was a well-headed goal and may well prove to be his last before he heads back to Helsingborgs on March 12th. Mnachester United emerged triumphant as a team though, putting on an excellent display of football.

The draw takes place tomorrow so watch this space for news!

Lille…. Again!

                                    Saha Lille

Today, Lille went to the UEFA appealing body to complain against the goal that Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs scored against them last week in their Champions League first leg match for progression to the quarter finals. They lost, again, but it is not the last we have seen of the argument.

Lille travel to Old Trafford next week for the second leg and will play under protest before taking their appeal to the court of arbitration if the do go out of the competition. Manchester United should not be worried because it is doubtful that Lille will get the ruling overturned, but it may prove to be a distraction in their quest to progress. The main problem is that if Lille are successful in overturning the decision, it may leave football wide open for many similar protests that may indefinitely suspend a season and cast doubt over the legitimacy of winners. This is a crisis that referees have brought on themselves, but could bring about the downfall of football as we know it.

Manchester United Vs. Lille Will Be Interesting

                        Lille

Manchester United’s clash against Lille in the Champion’s League on March 7th is set to become very interesting, even before a ball has been kicked! Lille have today confirmed that they will continue to protest over Manchester United’s goal that saw them snatch a 1-0 win and aggregate advantage in their first leg last week.

UEFA have already dismissed one appeal against the quickly take free kick that Giggs converted, but the appeal is to be heard again on Friday for a final ruling. Lille are adamant that there was a technical error on the part of the referee and thus are refusing to drop the case, despite being charged with misconduct. It should certainly make for an interesting return leg at Old Trafford!

2006/7 Champion’s League

                                 Trophy

The 2006/7 Champions League had so far gone Manchester United’s way. I think that this is a fair assumption given that we finished top of group F having had six games played! We finished with 12 points from 4 wins and 2 losses, thus winning the league. The win over Lille in France on Wednesday firmly put us in the driving seat to make it through to the quater finals.

Here’s hoping the next update is as postive, but we are almost assured of a place in the next round, fingers crossed! Bring on Lille at Old Trafford on March 6th! With a 1-0 win away from home, surely Old Trafford will be faithful!
