Manchester United Player Profiles : Tim Howard

The relatively unknown American keeper joined the great United on from New Jersey Metrostars on July 15, 2003. United’s goalkeeping coach Tony Cotton had spotted him playing in New York for the Metrostars. There’s no doubting Tim’s talent, athleticism and application. But his confidence is more than a little fragile after some mistakes in key games. He was named Premiership goalkeeper of the year in his first season but came unstuck in 2004-5. The arrival of Edwin van der Saar in the summer of 2005 has firmly placed Howard on the bench for the foreseeable future. Is he prepared to wait possibly three years for van der Saar to retire? Or will it hurt his career more than help it should he do so? Only time will tell … but for now he’s off to Everton for the season (A good move in my opinion since he wasn’t getting anything here at United for the time being).

For his country, he has been consistently been ranked as the top keeper for the US. Beating off strong competition from the likes of Kasey Keller and Brad Friedel, Howard has emerged as the man to beat for the post between the sticks for the United States. With the arrival of Tomas Kuszczak, Howard’s future at United is uncertain to say the least and he might well opt to move away at the end of the season and I can’t say I blame him. Anyway, good luck to him!
